BLOOD GROUP
Your Blood Group is determined by the ABO system, which is a method of classifying blood according to protein markers on red blood cells. There are two types of antigens on the surface of the red blood cells.
Blood groups are determined by a protein (antigen) on the surface of the red cell. The ABO system has A and B antigens and the RhD system has the D antigen.
Another system was developed during experiments on Rhesus monkeys. It involves several antigens - the commonest (85%) is factor D or Rhesus positive. 15% do not have the factor and are hence classified as Rhesus negative. People with rare groups often wear an identification tab or a card in case of emergency.
The ABO blood group system was discovered by Karl Landsteiner in 1900.
The first successful blood transfusion was carried out in 1665 by Dr Richard Lower.
The average adult has around 5 trillion red blood cells in one litre of blood.
