CHRONIC FATIGUE SYNDROME PROFILE

This is an illness of uncertain cause but persistent viral infection and damage to the immune system are possibilities. A number develop the condition after i.e. Glandular Fever or exposure to toxins (organophosphates as used by farmers to `dip` sheep). The illness often follows a chest and gastric infection from which the person fails to recover. The major feature is a severe and debilitating muscle fatigue following exertion. Females are more commonly affected and the peak incidence is between the ages of 30 - 40 years, although young children and the elderly can also develop this.

The condition improves with rest in many cases although often not to their previous level of ability. 25% become chronically ill over a number of years with a marked reduction in ability.
