DOWNS RISK PROFILE 1

Downs Syndrome is the commonest chromosome abnormality. The majority of Downs syndrome is due to baby having an additional chromosome 21.
In the general population almost 1:800 pregnancies is affected.

The risk of having a Downs baby increases as mother's age rises:

· For a mother aged 25 years the risk is approximately 1:1500
· For a mother aged 30 years the risk increases to 1:1000
· For a mother aged 40 years the risk increases to 1:360

Rare cases of Downs Syndrome occur due to a chromosome defect carried in the parents. You should inform your Obstetrician/General Practitioner if there has been a case within your family.
