Downs Syndrome is the commonest chromosome abnormality. The majority of Downs
syndrome is due to baby having an additional chromosome 21.
In the general population almost 1:800 pregnancies is affected.
The risk of having a Downs baby increases as mother's age rises:
· For a mother aged 25 years the risk is approximately 1:1500
· For a mother aged 30 years the risk increases to 1:1000
· For a mother aged 40 years the risk increases to 1:360
Rare cases of Downs Syndrome occur due to a chromosome defect carried in the
parents. You should inform your Obstetrician/General Practitioner if there has
been a case within your family.
