FAT PROFILE (LIPIDS)

This is usually known as the lipid profile and helps with the prediction of atherosclerosis (the thickening of artery walls) and subsequent risk of heart disease. Research shows that measuring the different lipoproteins (as below) can indicate the risk factor.

Lifestyle and inherited factors may determine an increased risk. By comparing the results with lifestyle and family history (contained in The Medical Questionnaire) you will be more informed as to how you can reduce your risk and live a healthier lifestyle.

In cases where the levels are abnormal, medication may be given, at the discretion of your Medical Practitioner.

  • Cholesterol - the level is influenced by diet, heredity and metabolic diseases such as diabetes mellitus.
  • HDL Cholesterol - High Density Lipoprotein - HDL`s pick up cholesterol and carry it to liver for excretion thus high levels protect against arterial disease.
  • LDL Cholesterol - Low Density Lipoprotein – contain large amounts of cholesterol which is deposited in body cells hence high levels increase the risk.
  • Triglycerides - are the main form of fat stores in the body. They act as an energy reserve and provide a protective layer for delicate organs.
  • Heart Disease Risk Ratio / HDL % of total This is determined by calculating the ratios of Total Cholesterol, the HDL (‘good’ cholesterol).
