Herpes is a virus that causes cold sores (Herpes 1) and genital herpes (Herpes 2).
Cold sores are mainly caused by the Herpes 1 virus. This happens to about 80% of the population and is not usually something to worry about.
Approximately 1:5 adults has genital herpes caused by the Herpes 2 virus. Genital herpes can also be caused by the Herpes 1 virus. Only a third of the people with herpes know they are infected and are unknowingly passing it on.
Herpes does not always cause noticeable symptoms and so can infect a person "quietly", causing either no symptoms at all or symptoms so mild that they are interpreted as something else. Herpes can look like a yeast infection, irritation, pimples, and other things that occur on the genitalia.
