MINERAL SCREEN
The Mineral Screen is used to assess the commonest mineral deficiencies such as calcium, magnesium, phosphorous, iron, zinc and copper.
Minerals are essential to the functioning of the entire body. Some minerals are present in large amounts such as calcium. Others s like manganese exist in trace amounts but are critical to the bodies overall health and well- being.
The most common mineral / trace element deficiency is iron dificiency.
Additional calcium is sometimes needed to treat osteoporosis and iodine may be added to salt in areas where a dietary deficiency may occur.
Mineral supplements may be recommended, by a doctor, for those who have intestinal disorders that prevent proper absorption of minerals.
Mineral supplements taken in excess may cause harm and so should only be taken if advised by a doctor.
Calcium deficiency symptoms
Muscle aches and pains, muscle twitching and spasm, muscle cramps and reduced bone density.
Calcium is essential for building and maintaining healthy bones and teeth, muscles and blood clotting. Vitamin D is essential for proper calcium absorption.
Iron deficiency symptoms
Anaemia, brittle nails, confusion, constipation, depression, dizziness, fatigue, headaches, inflamed tongue and mouth lesions.
Iron is used by the body to make haemoglobin, which is a substance in red blood cells that carries oxygen from the lungs to body tissues.
Copper deficiency symptoms
Anaemia, arterial damage, depression, diarrhoea, fatigue, fragile bones, hair loss and hyperthyroidism.
Copper is used in energy production, connective tissue formation, iron metabolism and assists in maintaining the normal function of the brain and nervous system.
Magnesium deficiency symptoms
Anxiety, confusion, heart attack, hyperactivity, insomnia, nervousness, muscular irritability, restlessness and weakness.
Magnesium plays important roles in essential metabolic reactions and energy production.
Manganese deficiency symptoms
Atherosclerosis, dizziness, elevated cholesterol, glucose intolerance, hearing loss, loss of muscle control and ringing in ears.
Manganese can be both nutritional and toxic. Manganese is involved in bone development, wound healing, and it has anti-oxidant properties. It is also involved in the metabolism of carbohydrates, amino acids and cholesterol.
Zinc deficiency symptoms
Acne, amnesia, apathy, brittle nails, delayed sexual maturity, depression, fatigue, growth impairment, hair loss, high cholesterol levels, immune impairment, impotence, irritability, lethargy, loss of appetite, male infertility, memory impairment and paranoia.
Zinc is an essential trace element.
