Atypical pneumonia refers to pneumonia caused by certain bacteria such as Mycoplasma
pneumoniae, Chlamydia pneumoniae and Legionella pneumophila.
Mycoplasma pneumonia
Mycoplasma pneumonia is a milder form of pneumonia. It often affects younger
people and can be associated with anaemia, rashes, meningitis, myelitis, and
encephalitis.
Chlamydia pneumonia
Chlamydia pneumonia occurs all the year round and accounts for 5-15%
of all pneumonias. It is usually mild.
Legionella pneumonia
Legionella pneumonia can be quite severe. It accounts for 2-6% of pneumonias
and has a higher mortality rate.
