Poliomyelitis is an acute viral illness that follows gastro-intestinal infection by one of the three types of poliovirus. Flaccid paralysis and aseptic meningitis occurs in less that 1 per cent of polio virus infections.
Transmission is usually by the faecal-oral route. Infection of others remains possible whilst the virus in being excreted. The virus persists in the throat for about one week and may be excreted in the faeces for many weeks. The incubation period ranges from 3-21 days. Cases are most infectious from 7-10 days before and after the onset of symptoms.
Poliomyelitis is effectively prevented by vaccination.
