THALASSAEMIA SCREEN

Thallassaemia is caused by the inheritance of a defective gene. There are two types of thallassaemia - alpha thallassaemia and beta thallasaemia. (alpha thalassemias occur most commonly in people from south east Asia and China).

It is an a hereditary disorder characterized by defective production of haemoglobin which leads to a decreased production and increased destruction of red blood cells.

Genes must be inherited from both parents to acquire the disease. If one gene is inherited, the person will be a carrier of the disease, but will not have symptoms.

Thallassaemia is also known as Mediterranean anaemia and Cooley's anaemia.
