Thyroid tests are used to identify disorders of the thyroid such as hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism.
The thyroid gland secretes T4 and T3 into the bloodstream when it is stimulated by a hormone from the pituitary - TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone). The hormones regulate the body's metabolism (energy released from cells).
The thyroid hormones can be low (hypothyroidism). The commonest disorders are myxoedema, Graves` disease and Hashimoto`s disease. The symptoms will be tiredness, dry skin, hair loss, weight gain, sensitivity to cold and constipation.
If there is over production of the thyroid hormones (hyperthyroidism) the symptoms are reversed and include fatigue, anxiety, palpitations, sweating, weight loss, diarrhoea and intolerance to heat.
Causes Hormonal disorders, nutritional (deficiency of iodine), genetic, auto-immune disorders, infection, genetic, tumours and (rarely) congenital disorders.
